What is Chair Yoga? Who’s it for & what are the benefits?
Are you aware of all the different options for making yoga work for you and your lifestyle? Let me introduce Chair Yoga!
What is Chair Yoga?
Chair yoga is a gentle form of yoga that is practiced sitting on a chair or using a chair for support. It’s especially beneficial for people who may have mobility issues or find it challenging to practice traditional yoga poses on the floor. Chair yoga typically involves a series of gentle stretches, breathing exercises, and simple movements that can improve flexibility, strength, and relaxation. It’s often used in senior centers, workplaces, and rehabilitation settings, but it’s suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, my meditation group started meeting via Zoom as a way to continue meeting as a group. One of our members is an amazing Yoga Instructor. She volunteered to offer Mindful Movements instead of our typical Walking Meditation and so we all got introduced to what was basically Chair Yoga without knowing it by that name. Our average group member is a little older than me but this was mostly a way to help us all get active since many were becoming more sedentary in the early times of the quarantine. We all really love it and it is now part of our culture.
Who is Chair Yoga Good For?
Chair yoga is beneficial for a wide range of people, especially those who may have mobility issues or difficulty with traditional yoga poses on the floor, due to age, injury, or other physical limitations.
Chair Yoga is particularly suitable for:
- Seniors: Chair yoga allows older adults to experience the benefits of yoga without the potential strain of getting up and down from the floor or holding challenging poses. Any movement is better than no movement and doing arm stretches above your head can really get the heart rate going.
- Individuals with Limited Mobility: Those recovering from surgery, or injury, or living with conditions like arthritis, multiple sclerosis, or Parkinson’s disease can participate in chair yoga comfortably. This is one thing I love about yoga is it can be very inclusive and accessible.
- Office Workers: People who spend long hours sitting at a desk can use chair yoga to relieve tension, improve posture, and combat the negative effects of prolonged sitting. I should share this works in other areas as well. Just the other day I was standing for long hours at my son’s hockey tournament and my back was starting to hurt so I started doing a few poses and stretches to ease my pain. These were mostly learned from chair yoga (mindful movements, ha!).
- Beginners: Chair yoga provides a gentle introduction to yoga practice, making it accessible to those who are new to yoga or exercise in general. Yoga is a lot harder than it looks. It is important to ease into your practice. I’ve jumped into some advanced classes and got my butt kicked. Start slow, my friends. Start slow.
- Pregnant Women: Modified yoga poses done with the support of a chair can be safe and beneficial for expectant mothers, helping to alleviate discomfort and promote relaxation.
- Individuals with Balance Issues: Using a chair for support provides stability, making it safer for those who struggle with balance to participate in yoga practice. Again, this is another way to make getting started with yoga easier.
Overall, chair yoga offers a gentle and accessible way for people of all ages and abilities to improve flexibility, strength, and overall well-being. If you have not tried chair yoga yet but new to yoga, you might be surprised how empowering this can be.
What are the Benefits of Chair Yoga?
I covered a lot of benefits related to the above thoughts on WHO chair yoga is best for but let me just wind things down with a bit more about the benefits of Chair Yoga…
- Accessibility: Chair yoga makes yoga accessible to a wider range of people, including seniors, those with disabilities, or individuals recovering from injuries. As I mentioned above this is really important to me and yoga is one practice that can make the world a little healthier AND a bit more INCLUSIVE! That is awesome!
- Improved Flexibility: Chair yoga helps increase flexibility through gentle stretching exercises, promoting a better range of motion in joints. This is one of the reasons I am so passionate about yoga and being more flexible also leads to longevity. Who doesn’t want that?
- Strength Building: While seated, participants engage in various poses that help strengthen muscles, particularly in the core, arms, and legs. The core is one of my weak spots and the more I practice the stronger my core gets.
- Balance Enhancement: Chair yoga includes poses that focus on balance, helping to improve stability and reduce the risk of falls, especially in older adults. It also makes building your balance fairly easy with consistency.
- Stress Reduction: Like traditional yoga, chair yoga incorporates breathing exercises and relaxation techniques, promoting relaxation and reducing stress levels. As a longtime meditator, this can be a game changer!
- Improved Posture: Practicing chair yoga can help improve posture by increasing awareness of body alignment and encouraging proper spinal alignment. I hate to say it, but this is another weakness and so getting better aligned more often is very helpful for changing those bad slouching habits we may have picked up over time.
- Pain Relief: Chair yoga may alleviate pain associated with conditions such as arthritis, back pain, or sciatica, by gently stretching and strengthening muscles and promoting circulation.
- Enhanced Mind-Body Connection: Participants learn to connect their breath with movement, fostering mindfulness and a greater sense of body awareness. Yoga means connecting the body with the mind.
- Boosted Mood: Regular participation in chair yoga can uplift mood and improve overall well-being by releasing endorphins and reducing feelings of anxiety or depression. Chair yoga is an easy way to overcome those doldrums when you hit a rough patch. Give it a try!
- Community and Social Interaction: Chair yoga classes provide opportunities for social interaction and support, fostering a sense of community among participants.
Overall, chair yoga offers a gentle yet effective way to improve physical fitness, mental well-being, and overall quality of life for individuals of all ages and abilities. I would have never started here, but the pandemic sort of pushed it on me and you know what? I now have a deeper respect for how great chair yoga can be.

I am a yoga fan and practitioner, and studying to get a yoga teacher certificate. I am building the Yoga Directory to try to build a supportive and friendly online community as well as a way to find and try more yoga studios and styles of yoga locally. I want to help others do the same and grow their yoga practice.
I come from a mindfulness background and seem to resonate mostly with a spiritual-based yoga practice that may hail from roots in India.
I run a business called Hellagood Life which offers online education, community, and coaching in many areas for living one's best life. I find Yoga is a great addition to the other trainings I offer.
